How Age Calculation Works

Accurate age calculation walks through the calendar rather than dividing by a fixed number of days. The algorithm starts at the birth date and counts full years forward until adding another year would overshoot the target date. It then counts full months from the remaining partial year, and finally counts the leftover days. This approach naturally handles months of different lengths: moving from January 31 to February means the “day” component adjusts to 28 or 29 depending on whether it is a leap year. Leap years follow three rules — divisible by 4, except centuries, unless also divisible by 400 — which is why the year 2100 will not be a leap year even though 2096 and 2104 will be.

It is worth noting that chronological age (time elapsed since birth) differs from biological age, which reflects physiological wear and is influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and environment. Cultural conventions also vary: the traditional Korean age system counts everyone as one year old at birth and adds a year every Lunar New Year, which can make a person one or two years “older” than their Western age.
