Extracting favicons from external websites requires server-side HTTP requests to fetch remote resources.
A favicon (short for "favorite icon") is the small image that browsers display in the tab bar, bookmark list, and browser history next to your website's name. First introduced by Internet Explorer 5 in 1999 and standardized in the early 2000s, favicons have evolved from simple 16×16 pixel ICO files into a multi-format ecosystem covering browser tabs, mobile home screens, Windows taskbar tiles, and macOS Dock icons.
A missing or broken favicon is one of the most common oversights on professional websites. Beyond aesthetics, a favicon serves practical purposes: users with dozens of tabs open rely on favicons to identify tabs at a glance, and bookmarks without favicons look visually incomplete and are harder to find quickly. Studies on browser UX consistently show that favicons improve tab recognition speed, particularly in tab-heavy research workflows.
The days of a single favicon.ico file are long past. A complete, cross-platform favicon implementation requires multiple sizes and formats to cover every context where your brand icon appears. Here is what a complete favicon package includes:
ICO file (multi-size): The classic favicon.ico format can contain multiple icon sizes (16×16, 32×32, 48×48) in a single file. Windows displays 16×16 in the browser tab and 32×32 when creating desktop shortcuts. The ICO format is the only format that works reliably in Internet Explorer.
Apple Touch Icons: When users add a website to their iOS or macOS home screen, Safari uses the apple-touch-icon images. The standard size is 180×180 pixels. Without this file, Apple devices scale down your favicon, often producing a blurry result.
Android Chrome icons: Android Chrome uses icons defined in the web app manifest (site.webmanifest). The required sizes are 192×192 (standard icon) and 512×512 (used on Android splash screens). These are referenced by the manifest rather than directly in HTML.
Microsoft Tiles: Windows 10 and 11 support live tiles and pinned sites in Edge and the Start menu. The browserconfig.xml file defines the 150×150 tile image. Without this, Windows creates a generic blue tile for pinned sites.
Effective favicons are simple, recognizable at small sizes, and work on both light and dark backgrounds. A favicon is not a miniature version of your logo — it is a distilled symbol. Complex logos with fine lines, thin typography, or multiple colors often become unreadable at 16×16 pixels. Successful favicons typically use a single letter, a simple geometric shape, or a bold symbol that remains legible at thumbnail size.
When creating favicons from text or emoji using JumpTools, start with a high-contrast color combination. Dark text on a light background or light text on a saturated color tends to read most clearly in browser tabs. Avoid gradients in the background for text favicons, as they can obscure legibility at small sizes. Test your favicon at 16×16 by zooming out on the browser tab preview before finalizing.
Square source images work best. Rectangular source images are cropped to square during generation, which can cut off important content if your source image has a non-centered subject. Using a 512×512 square PNG as the source image is the recommended approach for highest quality output across all generated sizes.
