AI smart cropping with face/subject detection and social media posting require server-side services.
Each social media platform optimizes its image display for a specific user experience, device type, and content format. Instagram was designed for square photography on mobile devices, which is why its original standard was the 1:1 square at 1080×1080 pixels. Twitter (now X) is consumed in a feed format where images display inline with text, leading to a wide 16:9 aspect ratio for single-image posts. LinkedIn serves a professional audience reading on desktop, where the wider 1.91:1 ratio for posts maximizes visibility in the feed sidebar.
Using the wrong image dimensions on a social platform causes cropping, letterboxing (black bars), or compression artifacts from the platform's automatic resizing. Platform algorithms also tend to penalize images that don't match expected formats — a poorly formatted image may display at lower resolution or be cropped in ways that hide important content. Matching the platform's exact specifications is not just an aesthetic consideration; it directly affects how your content appears and performs.
Social platforms update their image specifications periodically to accommodate new features, device capabilities, and user interface changes. The current specifications for major platforms are:
Instagram supports three main post aspect ratios: square (1080×1080), portrait (1080×1350, which fills more vertical space in the feed), and landscape (1080×566). Stories and Reels use the full-screen 9:16 vertical format at 1080×1920. Portrait posts (4:5 ratio) generally perform better than square posts because they occupy more screen space in the feed.
Facebook has different requirements for profile photos (170×170), cover photos (820×312), and shared images (1200×630 for link previews, 1200×1200 for square posts). Facebook's dimensions are also used by Open Graph tags on websites, making them relevant for any page that gets shared on Facebook.
LinkedIn uses 1200×627 for shared article images, 1200×1200 for square posts, and 1584×396 for background banners. LinkedIn company page cover photos are 1128×191 — an extremely wide aspect ratio that most desktop composition tools don't produce natively, making a resize tool essential.
YouTube channel art displays at 2560×1440 on all devices but is cropped differently based on screen size. The safe zone (visible on all devices) is the central 1546×423 pixels. YouTube thumbnails are 1280×720 (16:9) and are one of the most important elements affecting video click-through rates.
Pinterest pins perform best in the 2:3 portrait ratio (1000×1500) because vertical images occupy more space on the Pinterest board grid, increasing visibility. Long pins (1:2.1 ratio, 1000×2100) can perform well for infographic-style content.
Start with the highest resolution version of your source image. Resizing always involves some quality loss when scaling down (due to pixel averaging in the interpolation algorithm) and serious quality degradation when scaling up. Beginning with a source at least 2× the target resolution ensures the output image retains sharpness after downscaling.
Be aware of subject positioning relative to the crop boundaries for each platform. An image that looks well-composed at 1:1 may have the subject's face cut off at 1.91:1, or key information cropped at 4:5. When creating content for multiple platforms, shoot or design with all target aspect ratios in mind, keeping the primary subject centered so it survives different crops. JumpTools allows downloading all sizes for a platform as a ZIP file, making it easy to compare how your image crops at each format before publishing.
